Bought the car last Saturday; 25 years, bodywork’s good. Car spends a week with me, I leave it parked outside for an hour and a half while I eat dinner and hey presto, rear hatch gets scratched and dented.

Ruined my fucking day.

Awww, that sucks. I somehow managed to get an enormous oblong scratch in two places down the entirety of my door yesterday, so I’m right there with you. I didn’t even visit a supermarket or anywhere else liable to get cart dings. The ones where you think you are safe are always the worst.

I’m assuming somebody leaned on it ass first and caused damage either with something in their back pocket or the “rivets” in their jeans. :/

I feel your pain. Literally parked the car for an hour and a half in front of my parents' flat and this happens. It always happens when you think it's going to be fine.

I never left the car for more than 10 minutes yesterday while not in the driveway. Ughhhhhhh. I don’t think it will buff out. I might have accepted the risk if I had been at a supermarket but this was all low risk street parking.

Too bad about the Polonez. My car’s paint already had lots of scratches (curse you feral cats! And myself!) but the FSO looked so minty for its age.

I wouldn’t say it was mint, but it was definitely pretty good  for an all original 25 year old car.

Fixing that ding means the hatch will no longer have original paint on it. Oh, and the badges will need to come off, which always means there is a risk of them not being re attached in exactly the right place and looking slightly off.

I know those might seem like really unimportant issues, but for once in my life I bought a car that was nice and pretty much all original, and I really wanted to keep it that way. :/

Yeah, it’s just such a hassle  for such a small issue that likely only you would notice. Too bad, but I hope you can get it fixed alright. Could you not just repaint a tiny spot and fade out the paint?

I’m hoping to be able to only paint the spoiler. I don’t think I’ll be able to get away with painting any less than that. We’ll see how it goes. The car’s going away next week to have some work done and I’ll be consulting a body shop after that. The area around the rear quarter lights needs a touch of paint either way, so I’ll probably have the spoiler fixed at the same time. Still, I’m disappointed because I got the car in the first place ‘ cause it was all original and only needed a tiny amount of body work, which is absolutely uncanny for a Polonez.

By the way, if you ever feel like talking sheds or cars in general, hit me up on Di scord . Seems like we’d get along just fine. :)

I love normal cars that have somehow been preserved. The FSO seems to fit the bill of a forgotten car of yesteryear that you never see around anymore, from what I’ve heard about it at least.

I like talking cars, but sheds are out of my area of expertise, which usually means I enjoy learning about them. This may be a water shed moment for me, hehe.

My Cruze desperately needs some body work. Most stuff I think I could do myself with some touch up paint but there are some complex areas on the bumpers that will need filler. The problem is that the paint code was, in error, not printed where it was supposed to be and most touch up paint websites list two different autumn metallics. No luck in VIN decoding either, somehow. Of course doing the brakes and addressing the glass transmission before it goes is more of a priority. I love this car but the work that should be done soon is piling up and it simply isn’t as fun as I want it to be.

Yeah, regular cars do have their appeal. That’s why I personally own two cars that were regular commuters not that long ago. Also, one of my favourite things to drive is my dad’s clapped out Transit van with half s mil on the clock.

Paint work (or body work in general) is not something I like to tackle by myself. I definitely prefer to leave it up to a professional. Even with my 126, on which my dad and I did what was essentially a full frane-off restoration in a small garage under my parents’ flat , we had the body sorted out by a proper shop.

That issue with the paint code on your Cruze sounds like a fairly major cockup by GM. I assume you tried contacting them about it? Either way, sounds like a considerable ballache.

I think way too many people overlook the simple delights of simple transportation to lust in vain after some million dollar piece of rolling art that will never be taken to its limit. I’d much rather have a driver that can put a smile on my face every weekend. Or even a fun daily that you know how to eek the fun out of. I love to go from my light and low powered (136 hp is pretty pokey for US standards ) Cruze to my dad’s heavy and high powered 02 Toyota Tundra TRD (gr een too!) because they are such different driving experiences.

I’ve actually never taken it to a dealership and I don’t really know where to start. There are so many imperfections. This long and deep scratch has me bummed out though. Those stupid fetal cats have done a number elsewhere though, climbing all over it and even scratching the window laminate.

T he interior, other than the warped dash, is still fantastic though.

Actually, I just don’t know where to start. Period. I need to do the brakes but the only self maintenance I’ve ever done is an oil change. Rotors should be fine, but I haven’t ordered anything yet. I don’t have much money and I want to learn some mechanical skills, but I’ve also been ill, not a good time to gauge whether you’re up for something like that.
